The Lord of the Rings: Gollum turned out to be not-so precious when we awarded it a terrible 2/10 earlier this year, but it may actually have strong competition for the gaming Golden Raspberries. Footage of the newly released Skull Island: Rise of Kong from GameMill is beginning to proliferate online – and it honestly beggars belief.
In one cut-scene, which has been shared over 30,000 times on Twitter, we see the ape responding with anger as a still image of some kind of purple scorpion leaps at his face. The production values are so wildly awful that it borders on parody – everything about this cut-scene is an abject failure, and it’s hard to believe it’s made it to market.
Clearly the development team was not given enough resources here, but sometimes it’s important to work within your limitations. Gameplay footage shows some of the worst character action combat you’re ever likely to see – the static, unresponsive beat-‘em-up gameplay wouldn’t have even been acceptable on the PS1, let alone the PS5.
Expect this game to be critically panned across the board; on this evidence, we can’t see it attracting a Metacritic score higher than Gollum’s woeful 34. It’s obviously been a great year overall for games, but there have been a handful of absolute rotters among the mountains of gems.

At least there's a giant enemy crab!
Man that is sad wtf is going on with devs 🤣
It’s pretty hard not to see that crab and reach the conclusion this is indeed a piss-take.
Other than that I can only say it takes a special kind of skill to make King bloody Kong feel small!
It wasn't the airplanes.....it was game reviewers killed the beast
Was this a rush or being lazy?
This is one for all the apes and monkeys to fling their faeces at.
People wonder why most reviews are always in the 5-10 range and most reviewers don't give 1-4 stars... there are games that truly deserve these scores
@themightyant I think one of the reasons scores range from 5-10 rather than lower is because a lot of games like this just don't get reviewed.
Generally there's only really audience interest in the "big" games, and it's obviously rare for a release to drop a clanger like Gollum.
We've come a long way since the days of Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie... unfortunately we've been going in the wrong direction this whole time!
@get2sammyb Agreed, that was kinda my point... that I clearly didn't get across. lol
Although I know some people argue that if these games don't really get reviewed then shouldn't the review scale reflect the games that actually DO get reviewed.
To be clear, i'm NOT talking about Push Square here, you DO use the full range of your review scale and have handed out many < 5 scores this gen including a 2 for Gollum at the low bar. But many sites don't and almost never give < 5 which, to me, makes their review scale less useful than yours.
@Voltan please, have some respect. This game is based on actual historical battles.
Pete tong has bn eclipsed by King Kong
Just port the Peter Jackson's King Kong game instead. This is just a travesty. King Kong deserves better.
@Powerplay94 give mechs v kaijus a go. A decent little tower defence game with some prettt decent depth once you get past the clunky AI
When its 8pm and you have a 12am deadline
Just as important, why has this game even been made anyway? Kong Skull Island, the movie, came out in 2017 so it doesn't even really tie in with that. I can't see how anyone would be interested in this regardless?
Gamers will still buy it.
Devs will still release more just like it. Because gamers will buy the next one like it.
Wow that Kong closeup makes Craig The Halo Infinite Brute look like a supermodel.
The memes shall be delicious.
@Perturbator hahaha.. I was just about to say something about Craig the Brute, but you beat me to it.
It’s unfair to judge before we’ve seen the full thing - what if these are nightmares Kong has, during a heart-breaking and thrilling narrative adventure that will live on as the single greatest story to grace the systems?
SMH
Pre ordered !! ......pah, who needs Spiderman 2??
Dont know what everyones complaining about🤷♂️. GOTY contender right there.
@get2sammyb sooo who on the push square team will have the honour of reviewing this one
@Powerplay94 a similar game? Mechs v kaijus is the name of the game I’m referring to 🙂
@tomassi “Skull Island” the tv show just came out 5 months ago in June, and this looks more like the show than the movie.
https://www.netflix.com/title/81312426
That crab fight video looks just like “Donkey Kong Country” on the SNES. 😂
@Gbarsotini Poor Microsoft will never hear the end of that
@get2sammyb That is pitty that not all, even lowcost, games are not revieved. There is a lot of games that can be judged only by price and how often they are on sale... Maybe they are good, but who knows? or is willing to spend hardly earned money on rabbit in sack?
Might need a new shovel for this, and a deep hole.
Aw yeah! Games like these are a treasure-trove for hilarious clips. Those sliding crabs, just beautiful!
@rjejr Ah, makes sense. Didn't know there was a TV show.
I was intrigued when they announced it
My intrigueness can stay on the shelf, oh my word.
When this was first announced, I was hoping that this would be a Maneater type game-not great graphics or story, but good for a few afternoons of destruction and mayhem fun.
Does not seem this will even get to that bar.........
Who do these guys think they are??? Buncha...Laughin' Jokin' Numbnuts...
this feels like we are in a new golden age of licensed games! this takes me back to the 90s and 2000s when you could count on licensed games being hot piles of trash almost every time!
Why spend all that time and money on a game you can’t possibly do justice too? They could have put out a crisp little 2D retro gem instead of slogging ahead with a sloppy impactless 3D mess.
This is going to steal loads of sales from Spiderman 2. Why didn't sony delay it to avoid going against this? They'll regret it watch this space
@Loamy I'm still curious to see if can tolerate gollum enough to finish it. Bet it's on PlayStation plus extra by February at latest
Good god, that’s dire
@get2sammyb I shall look forward to reading the review. My sympathies to the poor sod who draws the short straw.
No excuse for a game like this with a so called professional team with all the right tools when I've seen single players make better games on dreams
PLEASE review this game, Push Square! It will be worth 40 pounds or so to give us all a good laugh. Lord knows we could all use one lately.
Least its not open world soulslike, that's the only bonus lol 😆
Maybe it will be a big seller to the 8 and under gamers.
Who else can see this as a future PS+ game? Probably April's ...
@GreatKwyjibo lol yeah 🤣👍
